How Much Does Flight School Cost in 2026?

A realistic line-item breakdown of private pilot through commercial, plus the costs most students forget to budget.

Private pilot certificate

Expect $11,000–$17,000 in most U.S. markets. Aircraft rental at $150–$260/hr wet is the biggest line, followed by instructor time at $60–$95/hr.

Instrument rating

Typically $9,000–$12,000. Simulator time at $60–$110/hr can meaningfully reduce this if the school has an approved AATD.

Commercial and beyond

Commercial pilot runs $25,000–$32,000 on top of prior ratings. Zero-to-hired career programs are generally quoted between $80,000 and $95,000.

The forgotten costs

Medical exam ($120–$200), headset ($300–$1,100), written test fees ($175 each), checkride examiner fees ($800–$1,200 per checkride), charts, and study materials.
